Janai Purnima (the day when Brahmins change their sacred thread) that falls every year in the full moon of Bhadra which coincides with the English month of August is the busy period for pilgrims as devotees of various religious faith including Hindus, Buddhist and Shamans flock around the Gosainkunda Lake to have bath in the chilling lake of Gosainkunda which they strongly believe will cleanse their sin away. Gosainkunda Belt holds total 108 lakes of which Saraswati Kunda and Bhairab Kunda are the popular one and that we can have sight while en route.
A myth associated with the origin of Gosainkunda holds that the lake got manifested when Shiva, the destroyer God penetrated ground with his trident being unable to bear the trauma of Kalkut poison which he had to swallow to save the world. Devotees still claim to witness Lord Shiva lying asleep in the lake.
