Kathmandu valley has also some very important ans highly venerated buddhist sites. As one enters the valley, the first sight to catch the visitor’s eye is the hemispherical white dome ( stupa) of the swayambhu Maha chaitya perched majestically atop a hill on the western fringe of the kathmandu valley. The stupa symbolises the body of the buddha, which is nothing other than cosmos itself. The swayambhu  maha chaitya with the semi-closed eyes of the buddha overlooking the valley from all four directions is the most prominent monument and landmark of the valley.      As the ancient legend goes kathmandu valley was a lake long time ago .Right in the center of this lake was a full of blown lotus with the divine light atop . when Maha manjushri a saint from china heard about this he came all the way from china to the valley . He cut through the southern hill of the valley with his divine sword . The cleft made by the sword immediately drained the entire lake water making the valley floor ready for habitation.  Hundreds of votive shrines and other historical monuments built in and around this stupa speak a lot  about the significance and antiquity of this famed stupa . The stupa of swayambhu stands on the typically stylized lotus mandala base. The hemisherical part of chaitya is made of brick and stone on top of the hemispherical part lies the hermika which carries the eyes of vairochanawatching painted in the malla period. The stupa is also laden with in all the directions and believed to have been the 13 gold plated spires which symbolizes the 13 stages to slavation. The spire is crowded by a golden umbrella supported by a pole from within the center. Devotees pour lime down the chaitya to cure illness of family members.

Surrounded by hills, Boudhanath stupa is a jewel point in the centre of Natural mandala, a store of sacred energy. It is one of the most important place of pilgrimage for Buddhist . In the past, when the trade routes to central and western Tibet were fully open,  traders, pilgrims and travelers sought blessing at the stupa for safe passage over the mountain passes and gave thanksgiving to it upon arrival in the Kathmandu Valley. The stupa is commonly known as Boudha or Boudhanath, meaning Lord of wisdom . It is a protective, Purifactory and wish –granting stupa. But further, because of it’s antiquity – it’s origins are beyond the recall of folk memory, it’s foundation and fabric impregnated with the vibration of innumerable generations of devoted worship and powerful meditation, it’s awesome size and unique form and it’s basis in myths and legend . It  is also called boudha Bhagawan, Lord buddha since it has become one of the most significant objects of worship in the Buddhist universe. There  are many stories and legends concerning the origin and history of the stupa. The Himalayan Buddhist believes that a widow named Jyazima aspired to make a great offering of the Buddha ,using her hard earned savings as a poultry –keeper . she approached the locel king for permission and it was granted , on condition that she used an area of land measuring the size of single buffalo skin. However , Jyazima cut the skin into thin strips and claimed the land enclosed from the strips lay end to end. This mere women’s ambition to build such a magnificent monuments offering to the Buddha caused much jealousy between the rich and powerful at the time. The jealous lords pettitioned the king to have the stupa demolished , but the king who had allowed this happen, replied “ Since permission to build has been given, it shall not be rescinded “ thus the meaning of the stupa named Jyarung Khashor.

Shortly after the Buddha attained enlightenment at the age of 36, he delivered his first serman , in which he laid out the essential framework upon which all his later teaching were based. This framework consists of the Four Noble truths and the eight foldpath, which identifies the sources of sufferings and the path towards the cessation of sufferings and the attainment of salvation. In order to develop Lumbini as a pilgrimage center and a fountain of world peace, prof.kenzo Tange of Japan was assigned to create the Lumbini Masterplan by UN which was jointly approved by the Government of Nepal and UN in 1978.
