Jomsom Trek is an exciting, yet long and strenuous trek that is located in the Western Region of Nepal. Jomsom Trek demands considerable strength but offers the serene natural delights. Jomsom Trek begins from the tourist city of Pokhara and will eventually lead to the restricted region of Dolpo. Situated in the Trans-Himalayan region, Jomsom Trek lies within the previously restricted region of Upper Dolpo as it shares the basic characteristic of Tibetan Plateau in being cold, having low density of vegetation and remaining arid. Jomsom Trek will introduce you to some of the enchanting places in Mustang districts like Kagbeni, Marpha, Jomsom itself and the sacred temple of Muktinath, which is one of the holiest Hindu shrines in Nepal. Hence, Jomsom Trek ensures that your trek is filled with adventure as well as the added benefits of also being a pilgrimage tour. Mustang happens to be one of the most remote districts in Nepal and you will relish the opportunity to discover the ancient cultures and traditions that are still in practice in the region of Mustang.
As Jomsom Trek used to be restricted trekking until very recently, it is necessary to acquire a special permit from the government agency (Department of Immigration) before tourists venture into the Jomsom Trek. The trail continues along the arid surrounding as you move up towards Jomsom. While along the way, you will have some stupendous views of the arid and naked hills and also the majestic mountains that lie in the region. Kaligandaki River that flows along the way and the gorge it creates is also one of the highlights of Jomsom Trek.
The existing culture of the people of Jomsom region greatly resembles to the ancient Tibetan cultures exercised by the Buddhists. Treading along the realms of Jomsom and the region of Upper Mustang is undoubtedly one of the great ways to experience the charm of the old Himalayan Mountains and the desert valleys along with the old Tibetan cultures. Several old and new monasteries and ancient caves fall along the trekking trail of Jomsom Trek that provides testimony to the presence of the old cultures in Nepal.
